Gunsmithing and Blacksmithing
There are many times when I need to modify a part or repair a part because there are no parts available, This is when my Blacksmithing skills come into play. It does take a lot of skill to repair parts that are from 100-150 years old. With this approach a gun becomes usable and not just a wall hanger.
After years of use firing pins wear out and are shorter, this skill can stretch them back to original. Hammer sear notches can wear flush and not hold. I can rebuild the hammer sear and file and polish back to work.
Screws and Bolts that are worn out can be restored and threads re cut. This is very important if no replacement is available. I have even been able to lengthen bolts and recut the threads after damage broke the screw or bolt.
Gunsmithing for Cowboy Shooting
As member of SASS*, I might bring something different to the table. The 1850 Gunsmiths were also Blacksmiths.. When I am working on a gun to smooth out action or do a repair on a old gun, sometimes I use the skills of a Blacksmith to restore worn parts.
I have changed barrels, shortened barrels and reckoned them. I have milled barrels for the blade and formed blade sights and installed them.
I have gone over lever actions to smooth the action.
I have gone over guns to smooth, and lighten and shorten the trigger pull.
*SASS - Single Action Shooting Society where my sass name is 'Sparkin Iron'.
